Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi has voted Chelsea midfielder, Mikel Obi as the most valuable player in the African continent for the year 2013, saying the award will boost the team if the Chelsea midfielder claims it.

The former Lyn Oslo player is among the three finalists for the CAF award along with the duo of Ivory Coast players, Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba with the winner set to be announced at a ceremony on January 9.

“It will boost the team and Mikel and all Nigerians because it has been a long time since we last won the award and I know we deserve to win this year,” said the Nigeria coach, who is also in the race for the Coach of the Year.

Mikel was a crucial part of the Eagles team that won the AFCON title after nineteen year, and also helped Chelsea win a first-ever UEFA Europa League trophy. He was also outstanding at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw said that he will also not be surprised if the Nigerian clinch the coveted African Player of the Year Award.

“Nigeria was obviously the best football nation in Africa last year and I won’t be surprised if a player from the country emerges the player of the year. They deserve to get the award,” Bishaw was quoted as saying on mtnfootball
