Mexico 1-0 Cameroon: Peralta’s strike hands Mexico deserved win
Mexico overcame the setback of two poor refereeing
decisions to eventually beat Cameroon 1-0 in their
World Cup opener at the Estadio das Dunas this
evening.
Giovanni dos Santos struck twice in the first half to
hand his side the lead but both were wrongly ruled
out for offside by the officials.
Cameroon started the game rather cautiously with a
game plan to seemingly make the most of set
pieces, which they did in the early stages as
Mexico’s defence survived some shaky moments.
However, it was the Mexicans who dominated most
of the game with Dos Santos looking very sharp.
Mexico’s luck changed just past the hour as Dos
Santos was found in space between the two centre-
backs. Charles Itandje did well to block his shot, but
Peralta swooped to knock home from 12 yards.
Substitute Javier Hernandez missed a late chance to
double the lead as he blazed over when found
umarked by Miguel Layun.
Mexico goalie Guillermo Ochoa produced a crucial
diving save to keep out Benjamin Moukandjo’s
header in the latter stages of the match.
This win means the Central Americans are now level
on points with Brazil in Group A.
