Libya beat Ghana to win CHAN 2014 tournament

2014CHANLOGO580~12
Libya on Saturday became the surprise winners of the African Nations Championship(CHAN) beatingGhana 4-3 on penalty shootouts to win a major trophy for the first time in the country's history.

In what was a repeat of the 1982 African Nations Cup finals there was to be no repeat for Ghana,as Libya held their own to beat the Black Stars.

Both Libya and Ghana finished off from the same group, with the North African team finishing second.

Libya's success story was a delight for the neutrals who were rooting for them to win due to the political unrest that has ravaged their country.

And considering that the tournament is for locally based players,Libya's domestic league has not been in action for the past two years, owing to the wars in the country.

Between Libya and Ghana, they accounted for ten goals en-route the finals at the CHAN tournament, and it showed as both couldn't really carve out a good opening to score a goal.

Though either side had opportunities of nicking in a goal in extra time,Omar wasted a glorious chance for Libya, heading straight at Stephen Adams when faced on goal.

Ghana missed their first two penalty kicks but somehow recovered to force sudden death, however Libya edged it 4-3 to win their first ever major silverware in football.

Libya for winning the tournament got $750,000 prize money, while Ghana got $400,000 for finishing second.

Some cheers for Nigeria though as Ejike Uzoenyi emerged as the tournament's best player.
