Nigeria will beat Argentina this time- Rufai
Former Super Eagles shot stopper, Peter Rufai has thrown his weight behind the present Eagles team to beat Argentina when they clash at one of the group stage matches of the FIFA world cup in Brazil next year.
Argentina has defeated Nigeria twice in the world cup; first in 1994 when Rufai was Nigeria's number one losing to the Diego Maradona inspired side 2-1, and the second was in South Africa, when Argentina beat the Lars Largerback led team 1-0 in the opening campaign of the tournament.
“This time that jinx is going to be broken. This is the inspiration or motivation for the Super Eagles to crush them this time around,” Rufai told CompleteSports.
“It has reached a point Nigeria can look Argentina in the face and tell them enough is enough. You remember that Stephen Keshi was captain of the Super Eagles in 1994 when Argentina defeated?
“Now Keshi is the coach of Eagles and he must have learned as a player how and why we lost in 1994 so he will put the experiences together. Mikel will look at Lionel Messi in the face and tell him that, man this is our own time. So I believe that jinx is gonna end in Brazil.”
Rufai said he was optimistic that the Eagles will go all the way to the quarter finals of the competition in Brazil, breaking the second round record Nigeria has ever reached in the history of the championship.
“First I see them going beyond the group stage. Then I foresee them reaching the quarter finals and if they keep their heads low and cool they can get to the semi final as well and when they get to the semi final, who knows, anything can happen, you never can tell.”
